So after watching Newcastle land Emmanuel Riviere and complete their fifth signing of the summer, it made me think about the plight of Alan Pardew. Mike Ashley doesn’t strike me as the kind of bloke who doesn’t demand a return on his money, so let’s say we get 2-3 more players in (Janmaat, a striker, and a centre-half), and we don’t see an improved NUFC by Christmas, what then?
I’m not a Pardew apologist by any means, his dreadful record for Newcastle speaks for itself, but do the signings we’ve made mean he gets given more of a chance by the fans? Or does it mean that if we’re not doing well then he deserves the shaft because he can’t do a job with good players at his disposal?
Some fans will say that he’s got us to fifth in the Premier League with less of an investment. But what if that was a fluke and the last two seasons of mediocrity are the norm?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy, even a bit taken aback by the players Newcastle are signing, and even linked with. Who would have predicted this a few weeks ago? Is this a sign of trust from Mike Ashley to Pardew, or is it Pardew’s last chance to turn it around at Newcastle?
What do you think?
