If you were like me and thought ‘right, this will be the game where we’ll go on the front and take the game to a vulnerable Brighton’, you were completely wrong. Newcastle United tonight were anything but. When one player pressed another one couldn’t be bothered. Balls were launched forward toward 5ft 4″ Ryan Fraser. There were constant giveaways. It’s like this Newcastle team hadn’t trained all week.
Brighton had only won one game at home all season. One. In come Newcastle and Brighton all of a sudden were made to look like Brazil, stroking the ball around the pitch with Newcastle happy to sit deep. It was only a matter of time until Brighton scored and when they did it was a matter of how many.
After half-time, where you just wanted Newcastle to just do away with the negative football there was a moment where Newcastle looked dangerous – Ryan Fraser’s curling shot hitting the post though was about as good as it got. Minutes later Danny Welbeck scored his first Premier League goal since April 2018. At that point, Newcastle players seemed to have given up, and it got even worse when Maupay scored his first goal in 10 games. From then to the final whistle it was damage limitation as Steve Bruce brought on Sean Longstaff to help seal the 3-0 defeat (genius).
The performance and effort from the players who represent our football club tonight was just shocking. One of the worst performances I’ve seen in a long time, and we’ve seen some shockers. They looked very much like players who had no confidence in the manager’s ‘plan’, whatever that was. Two wins in twenty is surely end game for Steve Bruce, and he has to go.
The man has spent £100M and the team is in an even worse state before he arrived. At times tonight we were hanging on against a team one place above us in the league with one home victory all season – what’s going to happen when we play the top teams? No disrespect to Brighton though, they fully deserved the three points tonight. Newcastle were shocking, and Steve Bruce needs to be relieved of his duties. The sooner the better.
