Newcastle United Player Ratings vs. Brighton

In a winnable game against Brighton at St. James’s Park, the Newcastle players struggled to perform. The lack of quality from both teams was plain to see, and it’s pretty clear to all that serious investment is necessary if Newcastle United are to move up the Premier League table and away from the relegation zone.

Here’s Lee Ryder’s Newcastle player ratings in the game against Brighton:

  • Karl Darlow: 7
  • Deandre Yedlin: 6
  • Jamaal Lascelles: 7
  • Ciaran Clark: 7
  • Paul Dummett: 6
  • Matt Ritchie: 5
  • Mikel Merino: 7
  • Isaac Hayden: 6
  • Christian Atsu: 6
  • Joselu: 5
  • Dwight Gayle: 6
  • Ayoze Perez (on for Ritchie): 6
  • Jonjo Shelvey (on for Merino): N/A
  • Jacob Murphy (on for Joselu)

I think Lee’s ratings are a mixed bag here but mine aren’t too far off. I think giving Perez a 6 when he was played out of position and didn’t impact anything at all is a bit generous, and a 7 for Merino was too much for me – it wasn’t the Merino performance we’ve come to expect.

Here are my player ratings:

  • Karl Darlow: 7 – A couple of good stops and was a solid fill-in for the injured Rob Elliot. I still think we need a quality keeper though.
  • Deandre Yedlin: 5 – Didn’t really get going in the game and did more defensively than he did going forward.
  • Jamaal Lascelles: 7 – Solid performance from the captain.
  • Ciaran Clark: 6 – A couple of clearances were a bit iffy but other than that it was an okay performance.
  • Paul Dummett: 6 – Again, just average really.
  • Matt Ritchie: 5 – Set pieces were poor from Ritchie. Does Rafa value his work ethic more than his creativity?
  • Mikel Merino: 6 – Didn’t make his mark on a game. Would love to see a middle three of Merino, Hayden, and Shelvey.
  • Isaac Hayden: 6 – Had his moments.
  • Christian Atsu: 6 – Not involved enough. Unfortunately he’s our creative threat going forward and when he’s nullified our attack is pretty much impotent.
  • Joselu: 6 – Worked hard but still nothing to show for his hard work.
  • Dwight Gayle: 5 – Other than that header, I can’t think of other meaningful contributions.
  • Ayoze Perez (on for Ritchie): 5 – Didn’t have an impact.
  • Jonjo Shelvey (on for Merino): N/A
  • Jacob Murphy (on for Joselu): N/A
