Newcastle Player Ratings v Chelsea

There are loads of player ratings being thrown around by various media outlets. Some of them are way off the mark and others are half decent. I’ve decided to start doing my own after Newcastle matches and comparing them to what the media say.

Here are Lee Ryder’s ratings of the Newcastle team that faced Chelsea.

  • Karl Darlow: 8
  • Javier Manquillo: 4
  • Chancel Mbemba: 5
  • Florian Lejune: 4
  • Ciaran Clark: 5
  • Matt Ritchie: 4
  • Mikel Merino: 6
  • Mo Diame: 3
  • Jacob Murphy: 7
  • Ayoze Perez: 4
  • Dwight Gayle: 7
  • Isaac Hayden (on for Perez): 6
  • Jonjo Shelvey (on for Diame): 5
  • Deandre Yedlin (on for Merino): N/A

Here are my ratings of the Newcastle players against Chelsea:

  • Karl Darlow: 8 – Did well. The goals weren’t of his making but of the individual mistakes from the players in front of him.
  • Javier Manquillo: 4 – Did nowt.
  • Chancel Mbemba: 6 – Struggled to keep track of Morata. Other than that he certainly wasn’t the worst player. Needs more playing time.
  • Florian Lejune: 3 – Not good enough and couldn’t cope with Chelsea’s frontline. Bit soft in not challenging Morata.
  • Ciaran Clark: 5 – Gave his all, just wasn’t good enough.
  • Matt Ritchie: 3 – One of his worst games in a black and white shirt. Did a lot without doing anything at all. Other than giving away a penalty.
  • Mikel Merino: 6 – Never really got going.
  • Mo Diame: 2 – Just..why?
  • Jacob Murphy: 7 – Steadily improving game by game and offered a threat going forward.
  • Ayoze Perez: 3 – Didn’t even realise he was on the pitch. Only marginally more effective than Mo Diame.
  • Dwight Gayle: 7 – Worked hard harrying Chelsea’s backline. Stuck the ball in the net.
  • Isaac Hayden (on for Perez): 5 – Never got going.
  • Jonjo Shelvey (on for Diame): 5 – Ineffective when brought on.
  • Deandre Yedlin (on for Merino): N/A
