Update 2: Hatem Ben Arfa’s transfer to Newcastle United hangs in the balance tonight as it looks like the player and his club, Olympic Marseille, have had a bit of a falling out. The French media are reporting that Ben Arfa, accompanied by his lawyer, held a meeting today with club officials and announced that he wouldn’t play for Marseille again.
We can only speculate what Ben Arfa was told, but it looks like the chances of his move to Newcastle are growing slimmer everyday.
Update: It appears Ben Arfa has been attracting attention from other Premier League sides. However, the Frenchman made what appeared to be his last appearance for Marseille as he applauded all sides of the stadium during the weekend’s round of games. The attacking midfielder is with the French national squad, and while they need all the help they can get at the minute, the sooner he’s at St. James’s the better. Expect to see him no earlier than Thursday when something more official should be announced.
A French website published a story today which said that Hatem Ben Arfa would be on Tyneside this week to seal his move to Newcastle United. Apparently Ben Arfa wants to play in England and has turned down moves to Hoffenheim or Benfica.
Since the reliability of the source can’t be guaranteed, we have to assume that it’s just talk. However, Paul Fraser of the Echo posted a tweet which indicated that the Ben Arfa transfer to Newcastle would be a loan deal, with the payment being £800k.
It seems all we can do with this one is wait and see – time will tell!
