In their final pre-season game before the Premier League opener, a lacklustre Newcastle United side lost 4-1 against Cardiff City at Cardiff City Stadium. If there was ever a reminder that senior squad members are needed to bolster the Newcastle squad, then this was it…
Four first team members were left out of the squad for the game – Hatem ben Arfa, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, and Yohan Cabaye, and boy, were they missed.
Cardiff’s first goal from Aron Gunnarsson was a quality volle, but by all accounts, the second goal was from some poor defending from the Toon as Joe Ralls made them pay. The third was scored again by Gunnarsson before Shola Ameobi pulled one back for Newcastle as he tucked away a penalty not long into the second-half. That was about it for Newcastle though as Etien Velikonja got Cardiff’s fourth to cap a miserable day for the Geordies.
However, there was some positive news as Adam Campbell made his senior Newcastle United debut replacing Gabriel Obertan.
All in all, there’s nothing to write home about here, and nothing to get carried away with – just like getting excited about the Toon beating Hartlepool a week or so ago is pretty pointless. It’s pre-season, remember the 6-1 drubbing Leyton Orient gave us two years ago? From what I remember, that season didn’t go too badly. Rather get the cobwebs out now, than against the Spuds in a weeks time in front of a raucous St. James’s Park crowd.
