Today, Newcastle United added another Frenchman to their ranks with the signing of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. The central defender signed on a five-and-a-half year deal, and his former club were Montpellier.
The fee for the 23 year old is said to be around £7 million, and he will wear the number 13 shirt (lucky for some, eh?).
Mapou gained eight caps with the French U-21 international team and has so far gained three caps with the French international senior side.
After watching his interview on the official club site Mapou appears to be a very settled and down-to-earth young man, who genuinely appears interested in the task at hand, and in the club itself. Quite possibly even captain material. Some of the young kids would do well to take a leaf out of the young Frenchman’s book.
The question now is who will be his partner in the heart of Newcastle’s defence? Colo could be on his way out, and that just leaves Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson. Best case scenario is that Coloccini will stay until the summer, and a suitable replacement will be found.
